Title: Perennial Garden Maintenance: The Basics

When: Friday 11:30am

Sonia Uyterhoeven, Head of Horticulture at Greenwood Gardens will help you prepare for the gardening season with a review of basic perennial garden maintenance. Begin the season by tidying up perennials - pinching, pruning, staking and grooming. By practicing a few simple steps, your gardens will look vibrant and healthy all season long.

Title: The Fabulous Flower Container Challenge

When: Friday 12:30pm

As two Garden Club members, Eileen Sniffen of GCLV and Chris Endris GC of Hunterdon Hills square off to create the best looking flower container, Bruce Crawford, Director of Rutgers Gardens will discuss what type of containers work best, the ideal soil, color combos, and strategies that will create an aesthetically pleasing container. In the end the favorite container will be determined by the audience.

Title: Taking Miniature Gardening from  Ordinary to Extraordinary

When: Friday 1:30pm

Learn keys to generating a “Wow!” factor in your miniature or container garden. From concept to execution, Philadelphia Flower Show Miniature Settings winners, Robin Tomasi (Master Gardener) and Hillary Lee (IGMA Artisan) share practical steps in four concise segments. Get tips and techniques on set-up, composition, maintenance, and more.

Ornamental Grasses have become increasingly popular over the past several decades, due in part to the lack of interest by deer. However, they have a number of other benefits for enhancing a garden’s design that are often overlooked, Bruce Crawford, Director of Rutgers Gardens will review a number of ways that grasses can make your garden more stunning, including methods of combining them with other perennials and woody plants. Discussions will also touch upon how to maintain ornamental grasses in the garden.

Please come and hear award winning gardener Hap Haven talk about what steps to take in your yard and home to become environmentally sustainable. Hap will start by defining the idea of “being green”, explore the options available to help you in the Garden State and how to measure success. Hap Haven, who carries multiple Building Performance Institute (BPI) certifications and was inducted into the BPI Hall of Fame in 2011, is a national leader in the field of Home Performance. In the 1980s Hap pioneered the "home systems approach" toward energy education for the Energy House, his first of three Green Model Homes.  Since then, Hap has been helping contractors and homeowners across the country be more sustainable in their homes and yards. Teddie Falcone will walk you through the do's and don'ts of creating a door hanging as Alicia Vacchianno from the Wall Township Garden Club and Kay Cross of Rake and Hoe Garden Club create a beautiful door hanging using succulents. In the end the favorite and most creative will be determined by the audience.
